Tell GM: Say No to Cleveland-Cliffs’ Dirty Steel

While we applaud General Motors’ (GM) pledge to become carbon-neutral by 2040 and no longer naming Cleveland-Cliffs their “Steel Supplier of the Year” after six consecutive years, GM’s support for Cliffs and their blast furnace steel mills seriously undermines GM’s commitment to that goal.

  • In 2021 Sierra Club and Environment Michigan filed notice to sue Cleveland-Cliffs over “blatant disregard” for emissions rules at its plant in Dearborn, Michigan.

  • In 2022, the steelmaker agreed to pay $3 million for spilling cyanide and ammonia into Lake Michigan.

  • In 2023, Cleveland-Cliffs announced plans to reline its blast furnace at Burns Harbor, IN whose continued operation would release 68 million tons of CO2 over its lifetime, the equivalent of 18 coal power plants.

  • In October of 2023 Cliffs had to pay 100 million dollars from the EPA due to violations of the Clear Air Act in order to reduce emissions from Cliffs Dearborn Works facility.

GM: You can’t make clean cars with Cleveland-Cliffs’ dirty steel. Take the lead in driving comprehensive industry decarbonization by insisting on low-carbon steel from all your suppliers.

Add your name to tell GM: say no to Cleveland-Cliffs’ dirty steel.
